How to Calculate Your Life Path Number by Hand

Your Life Path Number is considered the most important number in your numerology chart. It reveals your core personality traits, natural strengths, and the overall direction of your life journey.

Unlike the Expression or Soul Urge numbers, which are derived from your name, the Life Path comes purely from your birth date. That makes it the starting point for almost every numerology reading.

To find your Life Path Number, write out your full date of birth in numeric form: month, day, and four-digit year.

Reduce each part to a single digit (or Master Number) separately, then add those three results together and reduce again if needed.

For example, for a birth date of July 15, 1990:

- Month: July = 7 (already a single digit) - Day: 15 → 1 + 5 = 6 - Year: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

Now add the three results: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5. The Life Path Number is 5.

In Pythagorean numerology, 11, 22, and 33 are considered Master Numbers and are not reduced to a single digit during the calculation.

This means if any part of your birth date adds up to 11, 22, or 33 — or if your final total before last reduction is one of these — you keep it as a Master Number.

For example, someone born on February 29, 1984:

- Month: February = 2 - Day: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 (Master Number, keep as 11) - Year: 1984 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 22 (Master Number, keep as 22)

Total: 2 + 11 + 22 = 35 → 3 + 5 = 8. In this case the final result is 8, but the presence of 11 and 22 in the sub-totals is still noted by many readers as adding extra intensity.

The most common error is reducing the entire date all at once instead of breaking it into month, day, and year first. While this sometimes gives the same result, it can produce different outcomes — especially when Master Numbers are involved.

Another mistake is treating the year as a two-digit number. Always use the full four-digit year (e.g., 1990, not 90) to ensure accuracy.

Finally, remember that numerology uses the Gregorian calendar date on your birth certificate. If you were born in a region that uses a different calendar system, convert to the Gregorian equivalent first.
